May’s Monthly Competition Winners

The topic for our competition was “Wildlife - No Birds” and the judge was Andrew Sentipal. Andrew was an excellent judge and before he began with the judging, he shared with us what he was looking for in a great wildlife photo. Andrew was the winner for the Wildlife category in MAPV two years ago! Here are a few things we learned from Andrew last night:

Wildlife photography is difficult. It requires PATIENCE! He recommended following a couple pro wildlife photographers and sticking with them. If you follow too many, you could get advice that is all over the place, making it difficult to really know what to focus on. Andrew recommended when shooting, to learn how to set the settings specific for wildlife and save those settings. You will need to check your camera’s guide to see how to do this if it’s possible for your camera model. Learning to shoot wildlife is an ongoing process. You will continuously be learning. Your best teacher is EXPERIENCE. The more you shoot, the better you’ll get. When shooting, be sure to try all different kinds of shots: portraits (tight shot), environmental portraits (zooming out), and try to get action shots!

Andrew shared so many tips both before and during the judging. His feedback on each of the photos was very constructive. He reinforced the tips he had shared beforehand by pointing those things out in each photo. I think all of us agreed his feedback was very beneficial. And now, for the winners….
